Our Pub
As far as Colchester pubs go, The Odd One Out (“The Oddie”) is an institution.
Many of the experienced beer drinkers of Colchester and the surrounding area have very fond memories of cutting their beer teeth in the pub during the 80’s and 90’s. During these years, The Oddie stood alone as a free house offering a wide range of cask ales while brewery-owned pubs offered the typical narrow range of their own beers.
Never once losing its place in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, it became renowned for not only its wide selection of interesting and well-kept beers, but also for its quirky decor and John Parrick (the landlord’s) fondness for house rules.
By 2017 John and his wife Bridgit were ready to retire after 30+ years of running The Oddie. However, they were very keen to see the pub live on rather than it become yet another money-making venture for property developers.
The Oddie was reborn under Colchester Brewery on 1 May 2017.
Taking on an institution with a place in so many drinkers’ hearts was never going to be easy. Good traditional pubs are so much about the publican and John is undoubtedly a one-off. Nevertheless, we hope we’ve succeeded in retaining its unique character while still offering a diverse range of beers. There are two permanent Colchester Brewery beers, but the four other handpumps change all the time.
The Oddie reopens after the COVID-19 lockdown on 15 April 2021 at 4pm.
